Ep 8: The Yield Storm Meets the Earnings Machine

The Dow fell 374 points. And yet August still closed green — S&P up 2.6% for the month, Nasdaq nearly 4%. Monday was also Tim Cook's last day as Apple's CEO. Fifteen years. Tuesday: the yield storm — The 10-year Treasury yield hit a 19-month high — fifth straight session of climbing. Traders now put 68% odds on the Fed hiking rates, not cutting them. Dell Q2: the headline numbers — Revenue of $47 billion, up 58% year over year — a record. EPS of $7.04, more than tripled. The number that matters: Dell booked $60.9 billion in new AI server orders in a single quarter, the most in company history. Backlog exiting the quarter: $95 billion — more than a year of AI revenue, already signed.
Dell guidance: the $25B raise — Management raised full-year revenue guidance by $25 billion in one move, to $192 billion — up nearly 70% for the year. AI server revenue target: $74 billion, triple last year. The part everyone's missing: traditional servers grew 122% — faster than the AI side — because agentic AI workloads need CPUs, memory, and storage, not just GPUs. Dell says demand is compounding, not slowing.
Dell: arms dealer of the AI buildout — Dell has quietly become the company converting Nvidia chips and data center budgets into actual physical infrastructure. The compendium flagged AI infrastructure capex as the dominant tech theme, and Dell is the purest spending proxy there is. Bull case: whoever ships the racks wins, regardless of which model wins. Bear case: hyperscaler debt — BlackRock flagged $100 billion of it, and that's what funds these orders.
Apple: the Ternus era begins — Tuesday morning, John Ternus officially became Apple's CEO. Tim Cook ran the company for 15 years and stays on as executive chairman. Ternus is a hardware lifer. Bank of America calls it a bet on hardware dominance with Apple Intelligence as the catalyst — nearly 20% upside from here.
Apple: the risks — Apple is walking into a China squeeze: Android rivals gaining at the low end while Huawei pressures the premium tier. A legal fight is brewing with OpenAI over trade secrets — OpenAI called the dispute a mess of Apple's own making. The real question isn't whether Ternus can run the machine. It's whether Apple can define the AI era the way it defined the smartphone era. That answer is years out.
Nvidia encroaches on Broadcom — Nvidia invested $3.5 billion in MediaTek and is pushing NVLink Fusion into the custom AI chip market, alongside a new memory approach. Translation: Nvidia is moving into Broadcom's territory without building competing chips. Broadcom reports Wednesday, and analysts say it has to prove the custom chip pipeline is real. The bar keeps rising.
NIO: the math underneath the demand — Q2 revenue of $4.74 billion — a miss — even though deliveries grew and margins improved. The stock barely moved. Investors aren't paying for NIO's volume growth anymore; they're waiting for proof the losses actually shrink. Meanwhile Li Auto's August deliveries surged 32% and XPeng keeps climbing. The Chinese EV market is growing fine. NIO's problem isn't demand — it's the math underneath the demand.
