Ep 10: Oil Hit a Hundred, and the Politicians Showed Up

Macro first — Brent crude hit $99 and change, flirting with $100, on Iranian tension at the Strait of Hormuz. The ten-year Treasury yield hit its highest level since 2023 — cracking above 4.8%. The Dow dropped 578 points. And some traders are now pricing a rate HIKE at next week's Fed meeting. Not a cut. A hike.
Microsoft breaks out Azure — The big structural story Tuesday: for the first time, Microsoft is reporting Azure's numbers separately. The cloud business is running at $100 billion a year annualized. That's not a segment anymore — that's a Fortune 15 company living inside Microsoft. And they reorganized the entire reporting structure around AI. When a company changes its org chart, that's the real tell.
Nvidia buys Hugging Face — The biggest deal of the young month: Nvidia is buying Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Hugging Face is the world's home for open AI — 18 million developers, 3 million models. Jensen Huang isn't buying a product. He's buying the front door. Every startup that fine-tunes a model now walks through Nvidia's lobby.
The promise to hold — Huang made a commitment on day one: Hugging Face stays open, and Nvidia compute won't be required to use it. Good. Now we hold him to it. The strategic logic is obvious — Nvidia already sells the chips, finances the clouds, and now owns the distribution layer where developers live. The bear case: an 18-million-developer chokepoint under one chip monopoly is exactly what regulators love to look at.
Burry's counterpoint, tested — Michael Burry has been warning that AI chips depreciate fast and the buildout is a bubble. But six-year-old A100 chips are still reselling for nearly $5,000 each. If the hardware holds value that long, the depreciation bear case weakens a lot. My take: chips aren't milk. Demand for compute keeps running hot, and the used market is proving it.
Oracle on deck — The stock popped Tuesday on earnings-week excitement — up from the high $150s to about $163. DA Davidson's Gil Luria says Oracle can sell any compute it has — demand is never the question. The question is whether Oracle can FUND the buildout. Capital and compute are the two constraints.
The debt backdrop — Big Tech is on pace to issue a record $320 billion in bonds this year — 70% of Treasury issuance. Oracle is the most levered name in that cohort, with the $300 billion OpenAI deal hanging over it. Options markets are pricing a $47.8 billion swing on Thursday's print. That's not earnings — that's a verdict.
AI politics: the new villain — Dan Ives says political backlash could cut 10–15% of U.S. data center projects — he calls it the AI revolution's biggest threat, bigger than capex. 81% of Americans want more AI regulation. And Tuesday it stopped being just talk: Google and Blackstone's data-center venture is hitting delays at sites. Local opposition is now a real cost line.
Oil and energy — Brent pushing $100 on the Iran-Hormuz standoff, Chevron's CFO says they're doubling rigs in Venezuela over five years, and the majors are all higher this week — Exxon around $161, Chevron near $210, BP over $44. Oil IS inflation, and when oil runs, the whole market pays attention.
The clean-energy twist — The AI power story is still winning too. NextEra landed up to $1.9 billion in Energy Department commitments to restart a nuclear plant in Iowa. Enphase announced U.S. production of solid-state transformer modules for AI data centers — up to five megawatts a rack, with pilots next year. Even the solar-panel maker is now an AI infrastructure company.
Intel's wild card — The stock moved 10% Tuesday on an upgrade to Outperform with a $120 target. The thesis: Elon Musk's rumored Terafab chip project could give Intel's foundry business the scale it desperately needs. Intel closed above $104. A chip company worth watching because a different chip company might rescue it — that's this market right now.
Quick hits — Tesla bounced back above $365 as Goldman argued Cybercab could beat Waymo on cost by up to 30 cents a mile. Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent for everyone. Apple's foldable iPhone event is Wednesday with a $2,100 price tag expected. And OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly seeking investment-grade ratings before their IPOs — even AI companies want cheaper debt.
